Southern Rails is Saskatchewan's first shortline railroad, and is currently associated with the Western Canadian Short Line Railway Association. We operate in and around the Moose Jaw area, with track reaching all the way to Avonlea. Working alongside CN and CP we keep the yards in Moose Jaw organized and ensure an efficient orderly movement of cars. Our main focus is serving our community, which is why we sponsor a scholarship award at Avonlea school, put on a community day partnered with the Avonlea Heritage Museum, and help fund multiple events around Avonlea. If you ever see the big blue locomotive, that is our friendly crew working hard to ensure our goals are met.
Working at Southern Rails used to be a family tradition, and we like to apply that to how we run our business today. We treat everyone like family and attempt to maintain rail service to communities who benefit greatly from: shorter hauling distances, smaller loading facilities, less wait times, personal customer service, and quick delivery times. Our contribution to the transportation system is extremely important yet goes quietly un-noticed. We work diligently to perform the work that the Class 1 railroads gave up on. We support our communities through sponsorship and employment opportunities, and although ever changing, our mission statement has remained the same. Which is, “To operate a profitable railroad co-operative, recognizing and promoting the rural way of life, employment, and values, providing rural customers with the most economical transportation system.”
We provide three main services at Southern Rails:
1. We supply private storage at our Avonlea track. This storage is necessary for companies who do not have the space to hold cars in their track. The Avonlea track can store approximately 400 train cars, which are most often filled, so contact Southern Rails for availability if interested.
2. We also now offer transloading services at Tilney, Saskatchewan which is located 20 km southeast of Moose Jaw.
3. We do lots of switching of train cars in and around the Moose Jaw area. We exchange cars between CN and CP yards, for importing, loading, and exporting. We also bring cars for filling with grain and similar products to elevators along our rail which include BGL and Purely Canada.
